Carlo Francesco Dotti

Architect of San Luca

Santuario della Madonna di San Luca

Carlo Francesco Dotti (1669–1759) was born in Bologna, and he spent all his life there as one of the very few notable late Baroque architects the city produced. His fame rests largely on one building, the remarkable Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. Not much was being built in the depressed Bologna of the Papal States, and it's a shame Dotti didn't have a chance to do more.

Dotti also designed the reading room of the University, and the Arco del Meloncello, the centerpiece of the Portico that leads up to Madonna di San Luca.
