Nardo di Cione

Orcagna's Younger Brother

SS John the Baptist and others, by Nardo di Cione

Brother of Andrea Orcagna, Nardo di Cione (d. 1366) often worked with his sibling. His best surviving work are frescoes of the Last Judgement, Paradise and Hell in the Cappella Strozzi in Santa Maria Novella, surrounding Orcagna's magestrial altarpiece. Although the faces in these crowded scenes are hard to see with the naked eye, they show a great attention to individual detail; each has it own expression and personality. His son, Mariotto di Nardo was also an excellent painter.

Nardo also left some sadly damaged frescoes in the Badia Fiorentina, the Madonna del Parto in the Museo Bandini and a Crucifixion in the Uffizi.
