Jacopo da Empoli

Counter-Mannerist

Martyrdom of St Sebastian, in San Lorenzo

Born in Florence, Jacopo Chimenti (1551-1640) was best known after his father's birthplace. A student of Santi di Tito, he followed Santi in his reaction against the contortion and emotions of the Mannerists, favouring simpler inoffensive and often rather vapid compositions. He was also one of the few Florentines to paint still-life scenes.

HIs paintings are in San Lorenzo Casa Buonarroti, Pitti Palace and the Uffizi.
