Justus Sustermans

17th-century Medici Court Painter

Maria Maddelena, Wife of Cosimo II by Sustermans

Fleming Justus Sustermans (1597–1681), or Giusto Sustermans as he was known in Florence, came from Antwerp to the city by way of Paris at the invitation of Cosimo II de' Medici. Reputed one of the top portrait painters of the day, he spent much of the rest of his life painting the Medici family over the generations; their smug mugs adorn the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace and Museo Stibbert.
