Giardino dei Semplici (Orto Botanico)
World's Third Oldest Botanical Garden
The University’s Giardino dei Semplici, a botanical garden of 'simples' or medicinal plants was created by Cosimo I in 1545 (only the gardens in Pisa and Padua are older) and maintains much of its original layout, with medicinal herbs, Tuscan plants, water lily basins, carnivorous plants, cycads, flowers and tropical plants and palms in its greenhouses.
They are rightly proud of their five ancient trees, including the garden's senior citizen, a yew planted in 1720. It's usually very peaceful in the gardens, an oasis from the hustle noise and bustle of the city.
