Possibly a pupil of Giotto, Simone Martini (d. 1344) took the Sienese version of International Gothic to an almost metaphysical perfection, creating luminous, lyrical, and exquisitely drawn altarpieces and frescoes perhaps unsurpassed in the trecento. One of his finest golden Annunciations is in the Uffizi.
