pettole

fitters

These are usually just plain balls of fried dough, a bit like hush puppies in the southern United States, but they can also be sweet. Pettole are linked to certain holidays, when they often have other ingredients (anchovies, tomatoes, pecorino, boiled baccalà, etc). Often they form part of an antipasto.

Also spelled pìttule, pèttuli, pèttule, or zeppole.
