quaresimali

Lenten biscuits

Hard crunchy almond made without any fat, and so suitable for the forty days of Lent (Quaresima). Some say they are so hard just eating them is a penance. Each region of Italy has its own version: in Sicily they are made with almonds; in Tuscany they make them in the form of chocolate letters of the alphabet; the Romans make them with almonds and candied orange peel.
