panettone

Milan's Christmas cake

Panettone is more a sweet yeast bread than a cake: tall and round, with dried fruits, nuts or bits of chocolate added in. It was a traditional Christmas treat in Milan. There, after World War I, industrial bakers started making panettoni in large quantities. They became popular throughout Italy, and Italian emgirants took them around the world.
