cerase

cherries

Or singular, cerasa. Another word for ciliegie.

In Assisi, there is a story that as Santa Chiara (St Clare) lay on her death bed, she asked her nuns for a cerasa, even though they were out of season... but miraculously were able to find one.

A similar story is told of the dying St Francis, who asked for mostaccioli dolci.
