confetti

Jordan almonds

These sugared almonds come in colours, and as elsewhere in the Mediterranean, little baskets of them are given out to guests at weddings, baptisms, first communions, etc. Two towns are famous for them, Sulmona (Abruzzo) and Andria (Puglia)

They used to throw them at the honorees, hence the confusion with our paper confetti—but then they weren't almonds, but candy-coated coriander (cilantro) seeds. Italians still call paper confetti (coriandoli).
