berlingozzo

dense ring cake flavoured with aniseeds

Simple cake, originally from Lamporecchio near Pistoia, which is said to date from the time of Duke Cosimo de' Medici. Sometimes they are flavoured with orange or lemon zest instead of aniseed.

Berlingaccio, meaning “Fat Thursday”, is a word derived from German. To have fun at the table in Tuscany is berlingare.
