fusilli

corkscrew shaped pasta

fusilli

The name apparently is derived from the twisty patterns on the barrels of rifles (fucile). Sometimes they are hollow (fusilli bucati or fusilli col buco); sometimes they are extra long (fusilli lunghi), even the length of spaghetti (fusilli calabrese or napoletani) or wound extra tight (fusilli stretti). Big fat ones are fusilloni.
