torrone

nougat

The classic sweet made with egg whites and almonds, torrone they say was invented for the wedding of Bianca Visconti and Francesco Sforza in 1463. Many towns and regions across Italy argue about who makes the best.

turòon, Turàs, tetàs postcard

Cremona, the capital of violin making, is one of the contenders, especially as its bell tower, one of the tallest in Italy, is known as the Torrone. It likes to call itself the ‘City of the Three Ts’ (in dialect* turòon, Turàs, tetàs*). This was a postcard I bought there back in 1986! There have been several versions over the years.

To further consolidate its position as the queen of torrone, Cremona holds a Festa del Torrone in November.
