penne

pasta 'quills'

One of the most popular forms in Italy and around the world: thin ridged tubes, cut diagonally. They appear in the central Italian classic penne all'arrabiata. Pennine, the small version, are also quite popular.

You may also see penne lisce (smooth), penne zita (wide), pennoni (large ones) and pennette (another word for little ones).
