The Sicilian and Calabrese equivalent of the Neapolitan struffoli : little sweet fritters, covered with a icing (half chocolate and half lemon is popular) or arranged in a mound or crown shape, held together with honey, or caramel, and decorated with chopped nuts.

In Palermo, pignoccata generally mean just the typical fritters made for Carnival.
