zibibbo

muscat of Alexandria

Otherwise known as Moscatel, Moscatel Romano, Moscatel de Málaga, Muscat Gordo Blanco, Hanepoot, Lexia or Gordo, this sweet floral grape is believed to be the most ancient surviving domesticated grape, used by the ancient Egyptians and Carthaginians, and related to the modern Moscato. Its most famous use these days is in sherry.

The name zibibbo is derived from the Arabic, and in Italy, the Sicilian island of Pantelleria—geographically close to Tunisia—is especially known for them, and makes the grapes into a golden Moscato passito, said to be the closest to the Passum wine of Carthage, mentioned in the 1st century AD.
