Ateneo Veneto

Two hundred year-old institute of Science, Letters and Art

Figures on the Ateneo

The Ateneo Veneto, founded in 1812 as an institution for the promotion of the Sciences, Letters, Arts and Culture is housed in the former Scuola di Santa Maria e di San Girolamo, rebuilt after a fire by Alessandro Vittoria. Also known as the Scuola della Buona Morte, it was the seat of a confraternity associated with the nearby church of San Fantin that comforted prisoners who were condemned to death (Michelangelo belonged to the branch in Rome).

The building is now occupied by the whose members might let you in to see some mediocre paintings by Veronese – or they might not. The former church of the scuola is now the aula magna, or great hall used for lectures and concerts, while the first floor houses a precious library.
