Lazzaro Bastiani
Carpaccio's master
Lazzaro Bastiani (c. 1420–1512), was probably Carpaccio’s master, and the painter responsible for the ‘baby Carpaccios’ (Sant’Alvise) and the Portrait of Doge Francesco Foscari, in the Correr Museum. Well respected in his day (he is recorded, in 1462, as being paid the same rate as Giovanni Bellini). But many of his works have since been lost.
