Filippo Calendario

Master architect of the Palazzo Ducale

Palazzo Ducale

Born on Murano, Filippo Calendario (c.1315-d. 1355) was master architect of the Doge’s Palace, and probably the inventor of its unique top-heavy design, before his part in the Falier conspiracy saw him hanged from the column of the palace he built. And because the Republic expurgated all mentions of traitors from the archives, his other contributions to Venice are disputed.
