Michele Sanmicheli

Venice's fortifications wiz

Venetian gate in Heraklion, Crete

Born in Verona, Michele Sanmicheli (or Sammicheli) (1484–1559), was a refined Venetian Renaissance architect, best known for his fortifications. He worked most notably in the Serenissima's overseas territories, fortifying the port towns of Corfu, Crete and Dalmatia.

In Venice, his most notable works include the Forte di Sant’Andrea on the island of Le Vignole and the Grand Canal's Palazzo Grimani.
