Sebastiano Mazzoni

A Florentine painter in Venice

Sacrifice of Jephthah's Daughter, by Mazzoni

Born in Florence, painter Sebastiano Mazzoni (1611–78) moved to Venice in 1648. He was a follower of Baroque artists Lys and Maffei, but never seemed to get things quite right. His paintings are in the Ca' Rezzonico, Accademia, and Museo Correr. Some of his best work is rumoured to be in the hardly-ever open church of San Beneto.

Mazzoni also worked as an architect, designing the Palazzo Moro-Lin, the 'Palace of 13 Windows' on the Grand Canal.
