Palma il Vecchio
Painter of beautiful women
Palma il Vecchio (Jacopo Palma or Negreti, c. 1480–1528), was a follower of Giovanni Bellini and contemporary and competitor of Lorenzo Lotto. He adopted the rich colours and new sensuous style of Giorgione, and is best known for his beautiful paintings of women – courtesans and saints, often using his 'daughter' Violante as his model (a famous blonde bombshell of the day, no one knows if she was really related to the painter. She was also Titian's mistress, and model for some of his best-known works).
Works in Santa Maria Formosa, Museo Correr, Ca' Rezzonico, Accademia and the Querini-Stampalia.
