pain au lait

very soft ‘milk bread’

Pain au lait is a soft white bread made with milk and butter and usually an egg. It was the favourite of Marie de’ Medici, so originally known as pain à la reine. It’s also a bun made with lots of sugar in Franche-Comté.

It’s often sold in the form of petits pains or breakfast rolls. Kids are big fans.
