figue de Barbarie

prickly pears

The figue de Barbarie or prickly pear, originated in the Americas and now grows in the south of France and Corsica. In autumn, the sweet fruit (which well deserves its prickly name!) is sold in some of the larger supermarkets.

The oil extracted from its seeds is apparently very, very good for you, but very rare and expensive.
