Kosher in French is kascher or cacheroute. France has Europe’s largest Jewish population in Europe, present for 2000 years although recent terrorist attacks and a rise in antisemitism has led many to move to Israel.
The Marais, in Paris’s IV arrondissement, has been the centre of Jewish life in the capital since the 13th century; its rue des Rosiers is Jewish food centre, although even there you have to check the signs to make sure your falafel or shawarma is geniunely kosher.
