Bacon’ in France is similar to Canadian bacon (or back bacon, Irish bacon, English bacon). It is sold next to, and looks like ham, but is actually filet from the back of the pig, beech smoked (fumé au bois de hêtre), and generally sold thinly sliced.

For UK or US streaky bacon, look instead for poitrine
