Christópsomo

Χριστόψωμο

Christopsomo - Greek Christmas Bread

'Christ's bread', or Christmas bread, similar to tsoureki, with the addition of nuts, raisins, rosewater, honey, pine nuts and orange zest and baked with a cross on top.

Often homemade ones have decorations that symbolize a family's occupation or interests, full of best wishes and hopes. Many will have shelled walnuts on top, a symbol of fertility. The oldest member of the family will make the sign of the cross over it before slicing it up and distributing it around the table.

Also known as cross-bread, or Σταυρόψωμα (Stavrópsoma).
