aetópita

αετόπιτα

Literally ‘eagle pie’ but don’t worry: it has no eagles in it! It

can be a lemony pork pie with leeks, feta, many herbs and trachanas in an olive oil and vinegar pastry. It’s traditionally made for the New Year, and like a vasilopita, has a lucky coin baked in the pie.

Aetópita can also be a kind of flat yeast bread from Sýros, topped with fish fillets mixed with tomatoes, onions, fennel, garlic and olive oil.
