Cooking terms

Some useful words

Any of these words might come in handy at some point, especially if you are confronted with a Greek-only recipe (συνταγή, or syntagi). These are often quite vague when it comes to measurement: Greeks tend to cook με το μάτι (me to mati)—'with the eye'.

αλεσμένη (alesmeni): ground

αναμειγμένο (anameigmeno): blended

αποφλοιωμένες (apofloiomenes): peeled

ατμού (atmou): steamed

βαθιά τηγανητά (vathia tyganita): deep fried

βρασμένος (brasmenos): boiled

γεμιστό (yemisto): stuffed

γλικά (glika): ingredients

χούφτα (choufta): handful

επεξεργαστής τροφίμων (epexargastis trofimon): food processor
