Cooking terms and equipment

Some useful words

Any of these words might come in handy at some point, especially if you are confronted with a Greek-only recipe (συνταγή, or syntagi). These are often quite vague when it comes to measurement: Greeks tend to cook με το μάτι (me to máti)—'with the eye'.

αλεσμένη (alesméni): ground

αναμειγμένο (anameigméno): blended

αποφλοιωμένες (apofloioménes): peeled

ατμού (atmoú): steamed

βαθιά τηγανητά (vathiá tyganitá): deep fried

μπέικιν πάουντερ baking powder

βρασμένος (brasménos): boiled

γεμιστό (yemistó): stuffed

γλικά (gliká): ingredients

χούφτα (choufta): handful

επεξεργαστής τροφίμων (epexargastís trofímon): food processor
