It’s very fashionable these days in Greece to seek out ancient and folk recipes that have been lost in the rush to modernity with its often doubtful benefits.
Even in Homeric times, the healing herbs from great botanical wonderland that is Crete, in particular its mountains, were renowned, and they are the origin of Sarantabótano, a recently-launched tea made of 40 plants (Apple geranium, Angelica, Couchgrass, Althaea, Achilles, Hypericum, Silybum, Cloves, Rosemary, Dittany, Spearmint, Eucalyptus, Melissa, Zampoukos, Savory, Thyme, Hawthorn, Gallium, Lavender, Flaxseed, Lemon Verbena, Marjoram, Fennel seeds, Nettle, Sage, Pennyroyal, Oregano, Chamomile, Equisetum, Mint, Echinacea, Basil, Coriander, Taraxacum, Tilia, Rosehip, and Mallow).
It comes it three different flavours: classic, with cinnamon and cloves, or with lemon.
