About

This app is what it says on the box: it’s all about the Greek islands, their distinctive character, mythology, beaches, villages, cities, museums, archaeology, art, churches and monasteries, famous personalities and much more. Much of the text comes from Cadogan’s now out of print Greek Island guide (originally Greek Island Hopping, a long time ago!)

This was my very first guide book and very dear to my heart, as my father’s family comes from a Greek island, Ikaria, so I’ve actually left in a lot of goofy things that a 20 year old thought was important in 1977 (just for sentimental reasons!), although over the years many things have changed.

You will no longer find out which beaches have the softest sand to sleep on (now illegal nearly everywhere), or how you can travel around all the island for eight months on a £400 as I did then, or how to make sure you get a bit of hot water in the evening and not soak your towel/flood your room with exciting Greek plumbing (all works very well now, except maybe the toilets that still can’t digest toilet paper!).

This app, however, very light on practical information, although you will find links to the island tourist information web sites, which are usually very up-to-date. Do download Greece’s Best app for a lot more on that side of things and if you are venturing off the beaten Greek island track, check out my Greek food decoder.

Thank you for downloading the app. We would love to hear any comments or suggestions you have, tap the “Get in touch” menu entry to send us a message.

And if you like this app please take a moment to review it.

Greek Food Decoder

There’s far more to Greek cuisine than gyros, moussaka, and baklava. There are gogkes, ambelofasoula, and stamnagathi! And what’s the name of that beautiful fish that the waiter has just presented for your inspection? A sargos, skaros and a thrapsalo?

Italian Food Decoder

Barcelona Art & Culture

Barcelona Art & Culture

Barcelona is where Europe goes to play. She’s a city that sparkles and fizzes, making the world watch just to see what she’ll do next. Plunge straight into her buzzing heart and discover just how Barcelona became Barcelona with this remarkably in-depth app by two old pros who have been writing about the city for decades.

Bologna + Modena Art & Culture

Bologna + Modena Art & Culture

It’s an uncanny brown apparition on the misty Emilian plain, a city of a billion bricks and a thousand arcades, sheltering under a pair of tipsy, lofty medieval towers. Bologna may be the odd duck of Italian art cities, but no one can deny its geeky charisma. This is the city of learned doctors and Formula One speedsters, of promenaders under graceful porticos and platoons of ladies in furs, gliding serenely down the avenues on their bicycles.

Florence Art & Culture

Florence Art & Culture

Whether you only have a couple of days to visit Florence’s museums, or want to spend a vacation seeking out every single work by Donatello or every Medici villa, this is the app for you. The 400 entries cover not only the tourist sights, but also the biographies of the artists, sculptors, architects and writers who changed the history of the western art and thought from Masaccio and Michelangelo to the most obscure.

Venice Art & Culture

Venice Art & Culture

This enhanced, greatly expanded and updated version of Facaros and Pauls’ Cadogan guide to Venice offers an in-depth exploration of history, art and culture for any who want more than factoids and sound bites.
