A firm, sharp sheep cheese, first made during the Spanish occupation, Maiorchino comes from the Monti Peloritani in northeastern Sicily. In the village of Novara di Sicilia, its production in the spring is celebrated with the 'Gioco del Maiorchino' in April in which teams compete to roll wheels of the cheese through the streets. The cheese that goes the further wins.
They say a cheese can last ten years!
Also spelled maiurcheu.
