spring onion (green onion, or scallion)

Many different kinds, including those from red onions (cipollotti rossi). Often they're called scalogni (shallots) because Italians use sprouted shallots as spring onions, too.

Cipollotti nocerini from the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius are DOP.
