The golden aperitivo with the classy Art Nouveau label is made in Benevento, Italy's city of witches (streghe). The legends of secret black masses along the river Sabato (Sabbath) go way back. Under the Romans Benevento had an important Temple of Isis; the museum and the streets are full of Egyptian relics.
Liquore Strega was a favourite of Don Vito Corleone in Mario Puzo's Godfather. It's a tasty concoction of mint, cinnamon, juniper and many other things, and it gets its intense colour from saffron.
