pandorato

fried bread or a cake

Dip it in egg first, like 'French toast'. In Italy, this can be spread with cheese, or covered with fruit as a a dessert. Or it can be two slices fried as a sandwich with cheese and ham or anchovies in the middle (see cuscinetti). Some dishes and salads use cubes of pandorato with herbs, a kind of crouton.

Pandorato is also a name for various kinds of cakes, usually like a pandoro or panettone. In Rome, it's a popular kind of bread, made with lard or olive oil.
