Along with parsley, the most popular herb in Italy. In fact there are several varieties in Italy. The common, broad-leaved 'Greek' basil is the southern favourite. Some of the varieties grown in Liguria, the essential ingredient of pesto, is grown on seaside terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, have a DOP label.
