A favourite in Trieste, presnitz dates from the times of the Austro-Hungarian empire and was said to have been made for the first time in 1832 to honour the emperor Franz I (the name may come from Preis Prinzessin, the 'Princess's prize'). It is stuffed with almonds, walnuts, pine nuts, raisins, figs, dried apricots, chocolate, rum, cloves and cinnamon, although recipes vary.
