femminello

aromatic lemons

Said to be the oldest variety of lemons in Italy (depicted on the frescoes of Pompeii and Herculaneum and named after their breast and nipple shape) femminello lemons are a tart, aromatic, richly-flavoured variety grown on the Amalfi coast, on the Gargano peninsula in Puglia and in Sicily, where it accounts for 80 per cent of the lemon production. Its unique flavour makes it specially prized for limoncello and other drinks, sorbets and perfumes.
