passato/passata

purée/tomato sauce

Passato means a purée or thick soup: passato di verdure (vegetables), di piselli (peas) di lenticchie (lentils), di fave (broad beans), etc.

Passata means the preserved tomato sauce many families still make each year at tomato time for the year's pasta.

Either in small amounts is a passatina.
