Marco Basaiti

Giovanni Bellini's rival

Call of the Sons of Zebedee by Basaiti

Of disputed Albanian or more probably Greek origin, Marco Basaiti (1470–c. 1530) was a student and collaborator of Alvise Vivarini. He completed Vivarini's St Ambrose Enthroned with Saints (in the Frari) after his master's death, then developed one of the brightest palettes in Renaissance Venice, often competing with Giovanni Bellini for commissions.

Basaiti only has one other painting remaining in Venice, but it's a cracker: the luminous Call of the Sons of Zebedee in the Accademia.
