Andriolo de’ Santi
Sculptor of a prototypical tomb
Andriolo de’ Santi (d. before 1375), was a Paduan sculptor, who worked with Filippo Calendario on the capitals of the Ducal Palace. His tomb of Duccio degli Uberti in the Frari (1336) was probably the proto-type of the classic Venetian tomb: a sarcophagus topped by an arch, holding an effigy of the deceased. His son, Giovanni de’ Santi, carved the unwieldy Virgin in Madonna dell’Orto.
