One of Bologna's 20 surviving medieval towers, the Torre Alberici was leaning too far and in danger of falling over when it was shorn to its current 27m. Once part of the city's customs house, the tower and its shop below were restored in 1928: the latter, dated 1278, is said to be the oldest in Bologna. Today it's used for art exhibitions and other events.
