Maggio Musicale Fiorentino

Opera and Arts Festival

05.IX - Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino

Florence's renowned Maggio Musicale was Italy's first ever music festival, founded by the conductor Vittorio Gui in 1933 to promote obscure and forgotten operas (the first one was Verdi's then-seldom performed Nabucco), with avant garde settings; some of the original editions featured sets and costumes by Primo Conti.

It was so popular, the Maggio Musicale soon became an annual festival and has been going strong ever since outside of the interruption of the Second World War. Along with the four new operas presented in its spanking new home, the Opera di Firenze under the direction of Zubin Mehta, it also features concerts and ballets and other events from late April and into the first week of June.
