Vegetarians and vegans

Don’t despair!

Vegetarians and vegans

Just over four milllion, and 5% of the French are végétarien (vegetarian) and just over 1% are végétalien or végan, which is the same percentages as the United States, but only half of the percentage of vegetarians and vegans in the UK.

If you’re cooking vegan, the France vegetaliaenne website is packed with useful info and recipes (in French).

Increasingly French restaurants cater for vegetarians and vegans (half the lunch places in Paris and other big cities offer ‘bowls’ and mix and match salads). There will be à la carte choices and sometimes even set menus, even in the country’s great gastronomic temples (although some request that you warn them a day or two ahead). The Happy Cow lists 6000 vegetarian and vegan restaurants across the country.
