suce miel

medieval honey stick

suce miel

Before Europeans had sugar, the sweetest thing around was honey. For five generations Allauch has been making suce miel, old fashioned sticks made from honey, sugar and glucose wrapped in paper, to heat up in your hands as suck on them.

Allauch also makes chiques d’Allauch—bonbons with similar ingredients. The town used to be a haven for tobacco smugglers, and a chique is a plug of chewing tobacco; the look on your face when you stick a honey chique into the side of your mouth is similar.
