Before Europeans had sugar, the sweetest thing around was honey. For five generations Allauch has been making suce miel, old fashioned sticks made from honey, sugar and glucose wrapped in paper, to heat up and soften in your hands as suck on them.
Allauch also makes chiques d’Allauch—bonbons with similar ingredients. The town used te be a haven for its tobacco smugglers, and a chique is a plug of chewing tobacco; the look on your face when you bung a honey chique in your mouth is similar.
