kouféta

κουφέτα

Jordan almonds, the white or in pastel coloured sugar-coated almonds generally reserved for special occasions because of their symbolism: the almond represents the bitterness of life while the sugar around it represents the sweetness of love.

They are distributed to guests at baptisms and weddings in pretty little bomboniera bags, each holding five kouféta (symbolizing happiness, health, longevity, wealth, and fertility).
