Stew (from the medieval Venetian stufado). Stifado can be made with any main ingredient, including seafood, although the default is beef. Greek Australians make kangaroo stifado.
What makes a stifado stifado is its large quantity of small whole onions, often boiled in advance. Other ingredients include tomatoes (usually) vinegar and spices--often cinnamon and cloves, but there are hundreds of variations.
