snails, sea snails

Chiocciole di mare, or sea snails, can be many different species of whelks, limpets, etc. Also known as bomboletti, maruzzelle, garusolo or lumachine di mare.

bummalitte: sea snails cooked in a tomato sauce; an Abruzzese speciality often served at a panarda.

Chiocciole is the Tuscan word for lumache—snails (and also the Italian name for the @ sign).
